Shoot Em’ Up!

06/17/2013

Yet another crazy game night for the OOTAK crew!

I fairly confident that, this time, I caught all of the action. Monday night saw the wrapping up of our Coffin Rock scenario and it’s final, apocalyptic confrontation. Let’s just say that the hilarity, horror and conflaguration that follows our little band by no means represents who we, the members of OOTAK, are as actual people!

Quick breakdown as follows:

Becky – aka Christine “Chris” Walsh – Wow, who would have thought that a d4 in Throwing would be such a handy skill in the hands of a woman motivated to play some Savage Worlds! The good doctor has established one thing during this entire scenario: That she is good at killing. Louis, Twain, Tunkwana and Sully all have yet to see how she actually fares at doctorin’, but if it’s anything like her shooting or her throwing we just might make it out of this campaign in one piece. well, some of us anyway. Becky made spaghetti and breadsticks. She also concluded that civilized people eat off plates and that savages eat from bowls! Take that people!

Eric – aka Louis “Death” Owens – Suddenly decided that he would take the side of the law and found himself a mighty comfy little sniper spot. We finally established that Louis is pretty handy with a rifle and he made short work of a death-crazed cultist hell-bent on cutting Sully a pair of angel wings. Sadly, something very, VERY bad happens to Louis Owens…

Todd – aka Tunkwana – Made a brief appearance at the beginning of the game to announce that he wouldn’t be around for most of the session. Apparently eating is more important than gaming!? Pfffffhhttt! When Tunkwana did make his return it was to mostly scout out the Sheriff’s office. Let’s just say that Todd, in his previous incarnations, has spent WAY too much time checking for traps!

James – aka Twain Virgusson – Convinced us that the strange magic that can convey one through space-time can also completely render the prodigious amounts of alcohol flowing through one’s bloodstream completely inert! Twain also convinced us that “Shhhhhuuuuuutttttttttt uuuuuuuuppp!” is an appropriate greeting when the frightened owner of a house, that Twain was magically transported inside of, demands to know who intruded into his home. Twain felt mortal terror upon realizing that he, shockingly, had sobered up.

Oh no! I’m sober? I’m sober!

Patrick – aka Sully Beauregard – Is really, REALLY good at what he does. And what he (Sully) does is kill. Crazed cultists were no match for Sully’s murderous six-shooters. Although there will be a certain crispy cultist that will forever hop her way through Sully’s nightmares. Sound interesting? That’s because it is. Wait for it people!

Jayson – aka The GM –  Clearly Jayson is full of awesome. The crew spent part of the night wishing our fearless GM a very happy birthday OOTAK sytle! Although I think that most people who know him will concede that Jayson is still a horrible monster even if he is a year older and wiser…

Our Deadlands game continues next session…

I’ve Been Shot!

It is a sad, sad day in OOTAK-land this evening as I (Patrick) realized that I completely dropped the ball on last Monday night’s session of our regularly scheduled session.

Apparently I do not even know how to operate my own equipment properly and neglected to press the flashing red record button on my Tascam DR-40 recorder…

A brief breakdown of the action is as follows:

Becky – aka Christine Walsh: Becky, kicked off the evening with some delicious, homemade pizza. I can’t begin to express just how awesome it was. Alas, the recording of our Ooohs & Ahhhhs has been forever lost to time. Christine Walsh followed her friends into a seemingly abandoned mineshaft. Events transpired and eventually Christine consented to let a ghost “ride” her body a little further into the plot. Doctor Walsh established her prowess with a rifle when she shot “Sully” in the back for 19 damage. That’s right NINETEEN!

Becky: (laughing) I rolled a one on my shooting dice.
GM: Okay you hit Patrick’s character.
Becky: (still laughing) I do 19 damage…
GM: What’s your toughness?
Me: Five…
Group: laughing.
Me: Oh sh*t that kills me! (getting mad)
GM: No it doesn’t, you’re just at three wounds.
Me: Which effectively renders me dead…
GM: Do you wanna use a Benny to reroll?
Becky: No.
Me: Dammit!
Becky: Don’t worry I’ll heal you.
Me: Yeah, sure…
The Group: laughing

Let’s just say that one member of the infamous OOTAK crew lost his sh*t and nearly cried with frustration. Sadly, that outburst is forever lost to time and memory as well. Way to go Doctor Woman. Well played!

Eric – aka Louis “Death” Owens: Our fearless and intrepid leader led us into the jaws of death, not knowing that certain death awaited him. Not at the hands of the plot, or the vile scheming of OOTAK’s resident monster/GM. No, Louis Owens’ fate came down to a simple Vigor roll at the end of the session. Will “Death” Owens surrender his slowly ebbing life to a noble sacrifice? Or will he go for the TPK and take his “friends” out with him? We don’t yet know the answer, but you can bet on finding out at some point in the future!

Todd – aka Tunkwana: Tunkwana demonstrated that there are many things in this world that “Pale Face” does not seem to notice; as in, for instance, a trap that would have most certainly killed one of the party. Tunkwana and his spear are a force to be reckoned with. Don’t mess with a bad-ass native-American with a chip on his shoulder and a cougar the size of a lion!

James – aka Twain Virgussen: I think James, his characters, or both have a thing for horses. Seriously… Needless to say that Twain, fearing the horrors of his past come to life again in the darkened bowels of the spooky mineshaft, elected to stay with the horses and polish off his last bottle of grog. To be fair, Twain decided to confront his fears, in a moment of completely modest bravado, and attempted to join up with the rest of the party. Sadly he was raving by the time he got there. Thankfully he isn’t as handy with a rifle as Christine…

Patrick – aka “Sully” Beauregard: Sully got shot in the back and it hurt. In fact, it hurt so badly that I (Patrick) was forced to use my Adventure Card to keep from nearly dying. Thanks Doctor Woman! Yeah, I was the guy who lost his shit that night… 😛

Jayson – aka The GM: Likes leading the party into traps. He also has a penchant for monsters, well because, let’s face it, Jayson, our beloved GM, is a horrible monster and then Jayson was zombie…

I Shot The Sheriff!

So OOTAK’s Deadlands: Reloaded campaign kicked off about two weeks ago and I, for one, couldn’t be more excited about it.

I think its pretty safe to say that the majority of the OOTAK crew are fairly comfortable with the Savage Worlds game system. James, myself and Jayson are fans in particular and we have a grand total of four or five campaigns using the Savage Worlds system under our collective belt (you avid listeners will be familiar with at least a couple of these forays into the system).

Our first session consisted mostly of creating characters and getting a background feel for “the Weird West”; yes, there was lots of politically incorrect banter about Mormons!

Our latest session saw our campaign begin in earnest. I have included a brief breakdown of everybody’s character and a short character biography; obviously these biographies are subject to change:

Christine “Chris” Walsh, aka Doctor Woman – played by Becky – Christine Walsh is an illiterate frontiers-woman who learned her doctorin’ skills while living with a tribe of plains savages. Ironically she’s pretty damned good at it too. Christine has a penchant for going by “Chris” to frighten and intimidate the men who think she can’t “doctor” worth a damn!

Louis “Death” Owens – played by Eric – “Death” Owens is a former law-dog turned bounty hunter with a notorious reputation for the law, especially the death penalty. “Death” Owens is the leader of the group, or at least he thinks he is, and therefore our moral compass during the campaign… Oh sweet baby Jeebus, what have we gotten ourselves into?

Tunkwana – played by Todd – Our own cougar-packin’ savage. Tunkwana feels things; strange things that would blow the white man’s mind, if only the white man would notice him. Tunkwana is great at making fires, building campsites and roasting rotting horse-meat which he unabashedly serves to paleface. Oh yeah, Tunkwana doesn’t share his blankets.

Twain Virgussen – played by James – Twain is a pacifist because fighting in a war made him that way. Twain is also a drunk with a knack for asking insightful questions when his attention is not completely absorbed in the act of drinking. Twain is not our leader, in fact, following Twain anywhere will probably get us all killed.

Beauford Sullivan “Sully” Beauregard – played by Patrick – Sully is an illiterate southerner haunted by the dreams of the things he did while in the service of the Confederacy. Sully isn’t particularly proud of his past or the fact that he can’t read a damned lick. If you didn’t already guess, Sully has questionable morals and is stubborn as hell. You were warned Listener…

Our GM – played by Jayson – Jayson leads narrates yet another story packed full of terrible things that go bump in the night. Jayson has a penchant for playing douchebags really, REALLY well…

Enjoy the little clip of Peytne (the youngest member of OOTAK) singing a song about a cowgirl and a fat, bald, creepy man reciprocating with his version of “Soft Kitty”.

Duet!
